From then on, he questioned the highly classical and romantic figuration of the so-called Amorsolo School, venturing into a philosophy of painting that put emphasis not on imitation but the materiality of the medium. He became the staunch advocate of modernism, helping start the College of Fine Arts of the University of Santo Tomas, where he would serve as its director from 1935 to 1966. Portrait painting, particularly when commissioned, can often lead an artist to compromise his style and vision. But with exception of certain commissions near the end of his life, this was never the case with Edades. His portraits are an integral part of his oeuvre; a few of them, in fact, bear his highest achievements.
