In Second Turn, for instance, we are offered two haloed figures, the male bearing signs of Classicism, while the female, seated, is garbed in a traditional baro’t sayo. Their juxtaposition is further established by the wheel, which repeats the circular shape of their halos, as well as the rectangle of the door that mirrors the shape of two pages torn from a Filipiniana book. The Roman numeral II punctuates the blank slate from which the man seems to have emerged as if from a low sculptural relief. As a mixed-media collage, the work is indicative of the texture of history and the dialectical relationship between the East and the West. Implements of civilization (the wheel and the book) further extend and complicate such a relationship of what we often perceived as conflicting spheres. Here they are conflated in some kind of a balancing act — a combination of visuality and textuality that investigates their mutuality and apparent dichotomy. Read as a veritable page of its own, the painting posits a kind of equivalence, a symbiosis, a union of some kind. Ever vigilant of the freight of meaning and symbolism that an image carries, Jose John Santos III has extended his visionary figuration beyond our shores, exhibiting his works at Pearl Lam Galleries (Singapore) and Art Basel Hong Kong, among others.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Jose John Santos III (b.1970)
Second Turn
signed and dated 2005 (lower right)
mixed media on canvas
36” x 24” (91 cm x 61 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":3000000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":3000000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":3504000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":58672,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/132.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":131,"next":133,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
