His grandfather,was Leopoldo Aguinaldo who was dubbed “the Merchant King” andfounded the Aguinaldo’s department store and furniture manufacturingfirm. His father, Daniel, expanded the family’s interests into lumber andpearl cultivation.\n\nTrained at a U.S. military academy (his mother was American) andat a local business school, he did not receive formal training in the artsand was largely self-taught, as a result of his father’s disapproval of whatwas regarded at the time as a non-serious profession.\n\nHe found a kindred spirit in Fernando Zóbel who was himself leadinga double-life — with one foot in the corporate world of Ayala y Cia andthe other in the exciting terrain of the local art scene. Zóbel soon tookhim under his wing and Aguinaldo, at just 19, joined his first groupexhibition at the Philippine Art Gallery.\n\nThe following year, at age 20, Lee Aguinaldo was selectedto join Magtanggul Asa’s landmark show “The First Exhibitionof Non-Objective Art in Tagal” also at the Philippine Art Gallery.He contributed three works and was also singled out with lavishpraise. (There were no illustrations of his work as Asa insisted thatblack and white would “not do them justice.”)\n\n“White Wall No. 2”, created almost a decade later, shows Aguinaldoincreasing depth and dexterity. Here, he deftly heightens the effectsof an otherwise-flat white with accents of pink and blue, very muchin the style of Sorolla’s sunlight. In the center, he scatters cracks andholes illuminated with different primaries. The wall is thereforeno longer just a barrier but a tantalizing invitation to what could lieon the other side.\n\n- Lisa Guerrero Nakpil","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Lee Aguinaldo (1933-2007)
White Wall No.2
signed and dated 1960 (lower right)
oil on canvas
29 1/4” x 47 1/4” (74 cm x 120 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":4600000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":4600000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":5372800,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37402,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/139.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":138,"next":140,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
