Salva, Saprid: Sculptures & Sketches, Solomon Saprid, 1982, p.31 (illustrated)","write_up":"The Sheraton Style of furniture as interpreted by Duncan Phyfe in the New York became popular in the Philippine during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century onwards and greatly influenced furniture made in Gapan, Nueva Ecija and Baliwag, Bulacan. This was mainly because the United States was the colony’s greatest trading partner during the 1st three-quarters of that century.\n\nThis small narra sideboard in the Sheraton Style used red and yellow narra for its construction, red for the carcass and yellow for the drawers and side panels. It stands on four slim, ring-turned, tapering legs with plain shafts ending with spool feet. The shape of the leg indicates that the piece was made after the 1850s, when the tapering square legs were replaced by turned, tapering ones.\n\nThe square upper part of the leg is inlaid with a circular line inlay of lanite enclosing a stellar flower composed of eight elongated diamond-shaped lozenges radiating from a central bone incised with a dot at its center. Joining the front legs together is a narrow straight apron with ogive curves and cusps at either end and an arced apron in the middle inlaid with the same circle and stellar flower. The side aprons are plain straight ones.\n\nThe front and sides of the vertical carcass supports are inlaid with line-inlays of lanite flanking a series of seven disks with a pair of diamond-shaped lozenges attached to the top and bottom, forming an X-pattern.\n\nThe front and sides of the horizontal carcass frame, the edges of the top and the drawer supports are all bordered near the edges with line-inlays of lanite flanking a series of diamond-shaped bone.\n\nThe sideboard has three drawers with beautifully grained drawer faces: a wide one at the bottom and two smaller ones above, each with a silver keyhole shield. The small drawers each have a turned drawer pull of narra, while the large bottom drawer has a pair. Inlaid around each pull is a serrated circle of bone triangles joined at their bases.\n\nThe upper drawers are separated by a wide, vertical divider of red narra inlaid with a large urn-shaped piece of carabao bone, a most unusual detail. The drawer faces, of yellow narra, are bordered with a series of diamond-shaped lozenges that enclose a line-inlay of lanite forming a rectangle with quadrant corners and a semi-circle beneath each keyhole, the latter inlaid with triangles joined at the bases to form a serrated border. A line scroll with diamond-shaped leaves emanating from each side of the drawer pull on the small drawers drapes itself over the line-inlaid border to form a swag that ends with a flower made up of a bone disk incised to form a bud with six petals surrounded by six triangular pieces of bone with their tips pointing inward. A similar, yoke-shaped swag decorates the center of the lower drawer, but the line scroll emanates from either side of a stellar flower within a lanite line inlay surrounded by triangular disks of alternating heights forming a serrated edge. At the four inner corners of the drawer face are inlaid flowers similar to those terminating the swag.\n\nThe sides of the sideboard are made up of plain panels, while the top consists of a single plank with a beautiful grain that is devoid of decoration.\n\n-Martin I.
