Part of her mystery is because she was “shy and solitary” in character, compared to the rambunctious, articulate males of her generation. Part of the blame also lies in her departing from this country since 1954, spending the better part of four decades in her adopted home, Paris. She was described in the Philippine Cultural Exhibition catalogue as “one of the few Philippine art-ists who can devote full time to her painting.” The catalogue also noted that “her output was prodigious” and that she “used strong, vibrant colors and bright simple forms.” Her works, it pronounced, were attractive because they had a certain vitality, or in that peculiar Fifties’ term, “a certain whoopee.” “Lanterns No. 2” captures a Christmas scene: A man and a woman are hanging various lanterns out of a window. A candle burns bright to one side — this was from a time and place when wax lights were still used to illuminate the traditional lanterns. It is not clear if they are lantern-sellers — or just eager home-decorators. A laundry line is outlined behind them, appearing to be festive bunting. An over-sized oak-leaf fern called “pakpak-lawin locally” and typical of Filipino gardens, acts like a fourth lantern. “Lanterns No. 2” is the classic style of Saguil before she created her “lyrical cubism” consisting of undulating cells, dots, and circles. -Lisa Guerrero Nakpil","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Nena Saguil (1924-1994)
Lanterns No.2
signed and dated 1952 (lower right)
oil on masonite board
20” x 16” (51 cm x 41 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":6500000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":6500000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":7592000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":58691,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/150.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":149,"next":151,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
