In this intimate public scene, Manansala captures the imagery and intrigue of the marketplace, taking the viewer into a silent dialogue with the painting. Manansala’s women sit veiled and hunched over their tasks, their brown impassive faces like that of bulul, their large bare feet projecting from the hem of their saya. While their arrangement makes a formal composition in the two-dimensional plane of the canvas, it also has a spatial relationship in depth. The work is executed in the Cubist technique of overlapping, strongly colored planes(mostly brilliant blues), with the jewel-like facets, translucent and overlapping, in the backdrop defining an idyllic situation even if the reality suggests restless pace of labor in the rural areas.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Vicente Manansala (1910-1981)
Pounding Rice
signed and dated 1979 (upper right)
oil on canvas
33 1/4” x 38 1/2” (84 cm x 98 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":14000000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":14000000,"userBid":null,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":16352000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":58687,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/159.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":158,"next":160,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
