It servedas a dialogue with Jasper Johns' 'Painting with Two Balls'represented in the work as a pair of black squash balls heldbetween two plywood shelves.\n\nThis is the second of a trilogy of mainly plywood based worksfrom the 80's that started with 'Russian Paintings' (1984; LuzGallery) that refers to the works of Russian constructivists likeKazimir Malevich and Vladimir Tatlin, and with 'Cargo andDecoy' (1989; Pinaglabanan Galleries).\n\nThe color in this particular painting recall works by celebratedinternational contemporary artists who placed the color blue rightat the center of their practice like Barnett Newman, a leading AbstractExpressionist from the New York School known for his Newman 'stripe'that cuts across the center of his paintings, Ellsworth Kelly an exponentof minimalism who advanced the use of blue further with his largemonochromatic blue canvases and most importantly Yves Klein of theNouveau Realisme movement who even patented his own shade of blueknown as International Klein Blue.\n\nIn Chabet's practice, of particular interest is the use of this shadeof blue in Cargo and Decoy the culmination of his 80’s trilogy of workson plywood and was the last exhibition held in Pinaglabanan Galleriesbefore it closed in 1989. It is a large-scale installation whose title wasderived from South Pacific cargo cults. In this multi-part installation arenumerous plywood panels propped against wooden sawhorses thatappeared V-shaped and seem to simulate the waves of the sea as thesetables were painted blue. In this work he has pushed the color's usefurther. The exhibit questioned art itself and its representation (as adecoy) of reality. This work was again exhibited recently in a curatedexhibition of large-scale installations of several international artistsat the Encounters sector of Art Basel Hong Kong in February 2016.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Roberto Chabet (1937-2013)
House Paintings #11
acrylic on canvas
36” x 36” (91 cm x 91 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":380000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":380000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":443840,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37414,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/160.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":159,"next":161,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
