It was so-called because they originally were to be found in the caidas or anterooms and balconies of the parish convents, where they were used by the priests who wanted to relax. Since the friars put up their legs on either arm as they reclined, the arms were made to flare widely toward the front. Understandably, the sillon fraile went out of fashion after the Philippine Revolution against Spain, when the religious orders lost their hold on the economy due to the separation of the Church and State. The sillon fraile usually stood on turned front legs with tapering curved legs at the back. Occasionally, but rarely, was it made with cabriole legs. The wide caned seat of the sillon fraile always flared towards the front to accommodate the wide bottoms of portly friars, while its slightly reclined, undulating back, also caned, likewise flared upwards and was surmounted by a crest of carved and pierced scrollwork. This narra sillon has the typical form of such lounging chairs. Its turned front legs are in the form of a ring between spools above an upturned attenuated vase resting on a vase-shaped foot on bun feet. Thin slats connect each leg to the curved rear one. An incongruous apron connects the legs together in front, destroying the beautiful outline of its turning. The seat frame, deliberately made wide to accommodate portly friars, flares widely towards the front but, unlike the flat seats of most sillon fraile, the seat of this piece is contoured to form a shallow depression towards the back that ensures a more comfortable seat. The edges of the caned seat are framed with narrow narra slats to hide the ends of the caning. On either side of the front corners of the seat frame are turned arm supports in the shape of a vase and spools. The arms are supported above and below at the back by small narra scroll-shaped consoles. The wide arms are shaped in a shallow S-shape and flare slightly towards the front. The countered chair back is caned in one piece with the edges of the caning also framed with narra like that of the seat. Surmounting the back is a pierced crest carved at the center with a flower having four petals and flanked by a symmetrical leaf scroll.\n-Martin I.
