Choreographed as though in a dance, they provide harmonious order to the scene, in which certain repetitions of form — such as their head scarves or their gestural motion — accrue to some kind of resonant completion. Such is also true in these works that depict four women balancing a variety of goods on their heads. What is unique in the composition is that Magsaysay-Ho uses blocks of color, in the tradition of the Fauvist artists, to convey the landscape. Here, these blocks establish a patchwork of variegated shapes and textures, which establish a tight shot and provide the sense of depth to the four women. Their arms raised skyward to balance what are uniquely colored containers (which also, to a greater extent, repeat the evocative forms of the landscape), they are the characteristic Magsaysay-Ho women with their long necks and slits for eyes. Arranged from the bottom with an incremental increase in detail, these women show composure, dignity, and grace — a languid presence that animates not only the limbs but seems to extend to the air around them.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Anita Magsaysay-Ho (1914-2012)
Four Women
signed and dated 1947 (lower left)
oil on wood
24” x 20” (61 cm x 51 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":11000000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":11000000,"userBid":null,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":12848000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":58631,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/60.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":59,"next":61,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
