Purchased by George Pope Shannon, PhD (1892-1964). Dr. Shannon lived in the Philippines from 1918 to 1919, and again from about 1926 to 1929, during which time he was the head of the English department at the University of the Philippines. According to family history, Dr. Shannon purchased paintings directly from Amorsolo and de la Rosa while he was living in Manila, while Amorsolo was a part time instructor at UP and de la Rosa the dean of the School of Fine Arts. Apparently Dr. Shannon and Mr. Amorsolo were colleagues and peers of about the same age.","exhibited":null,"literature":null,"write_up":"Although the picture is intended to be a view of everyday life in the country, Fabian de la Rosa emphasizes boldly textured tonal structure in order to capture natural light, shade, and color, giving this work a tone not different from that of Macchaiolis who lived halfway across the world during the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1974, art critic Emmanuel Torres wrote, “As an artist, Don Fabian saw life with a cool eye, without the wish fulfilling neither romanticism of Hidalgo nor the aggressive heroics of Luna.” The Arcadian images of these painting provide nostalgic preserves of a pre-industrial world, underscoring De la Rosa’s approach as that of the remote outsider looking “in” even if the setting is outdoors. The working woman with her back turned to the viewer adds a powerful mystique about the workers of the field, which the artist tries to investigate. Although the woman and the other people are at work, the total atmosphere conveyed by the picture is one of festive ease. What puts Don Fabian’s works clearly above those of his contemporaries is a predilection for orchestrating pictorial elements of line, color, tone, and space in subtle balance. Each is subordinated to the total effect the painting aims for. None dominates over the others: the whole is always greater than the sum of its isolated parts. It is a picture full of life and movement.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Fabian de la Rosa (1869-1937)
Untitled
signed and dated 1918 (lower right)
oil on canvas
22” x 28” (56 cm x 71 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":0,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":0,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"UNSOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":0,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37357,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/65.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":64,"next":66,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
