The delicacy of lines and absence of perspective provide a sense of exoticism to the scene. The essence of the fighting cocks, is notable for its weightless, flat-out forms—an ethereality unmistakably Tabuena’s. Chairs, in the shorthand of history, are symbols of their owners. Thus, there are thrones for kings, stools for paupers, chaise-lounges for great beauties. No more famous chairs are there than Vincent Van Gogh’s legendary pair: a plain, straw-seated one for himself (shown in the previous pages) and a more formal, ornate one for confrère Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh represented himself as a simple, no-nonsense fellow, friend of the common folk. He portrayed Gauguin, on the other hand, as more studious, books strewn on his chair, and a candle to hint at his burning the midnight oil in study. In this untitled work of a gray chair, Luz has painted a secret self-portrait of himself. The chair he has selected is one of those fairly common rattan chairs of the period — here, he gives a nod to Van Gogh’s chair, sharing that his own tastes are simple, almost austere. The chair, however, is also modern in line, sleek in appearance, serving its purpose with style. On the chair, instead of Gauguin’s candle, is a bottle of wine, perhaps an allusion to Luz’s taste for the finer things in life. As wine is an acquired taste of the European, the wicker chair is all-Filipino. * Memorialized in a scrapbook compiled by Purita Kalaw-Ledesma at the Kalaw-Ledesma Museum archives. -Lisa Guerrero Nakpil","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Romeo Tabuena (1921-2015)
Cockfight
signed and dated 1999 (lower right)
oil on canvas
32” x 39 1/4” (81 cm x 100 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":700000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":700000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":817600,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":58635,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/69.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":68,"next":70,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
