In 1951, at the start of his career, he attracted the attention of a certain poet, the legendary Jose Garcia Villa who in the mid-century was hailed as one of the Philippines’ greatest minds. In a letter published in This Week*, (The Manila Chronicle’s weekly magazine), he wrote : “Generally, I do not like to make statements about our local artists, but now I feel I must draw attention to the work of Arturo Rogerio Luz. “Here at last is a first-rate Filipino talent in painting, comparable to Nick Joaquin’s in writing…. “His sense of form is alive and distinguished: he knows abstraction and austerity, the sense of space and balance, he distorts with intuitional rightness and grace — in other words, he is a real artist.” By 1956 — in a review of art, by the critic Ricaredo Demetillo, of the first decade since the country’s independence in 1946 — he was included in the august company of H.R. Ocampo, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, Vicente S. Manansala and his friend, Fernando Zóbel.
