Joya was all of 20 years old. He wasenrolled at the University of the Philippines School of FineArts and had become a member of the Art Association of thePhilippines, where he had been featured in various exhibits.“Of local artists, he liked Anita Magsaysay-Ho best,” accordingto a feature on star art students in the press that year.\n\nJoya was selected as one of the featured artists in the PAG’s firstinternational exhibit, the Philippine Cultural Exhibition, whichopened in two venues in New York City and a third in WashingtonD.C. from September 1953 to March 1954. He was describedin the catalogue as “probably the youngest artist in the PAGgroup” and was certainly one of its most applauded, havingrepresented the Philippines in an international art studentsexhibition in Philadelphia in 1952 as well as besting the ShellNational Competition for students that same year. He graduatedfrom UP in 1953 and thanks to the support of PAG and itsinfluential members such as Fernando Zobel, he received variousscholarships in Spain as well as the United States.\n\nIn 1954 through 1957, he had a succession of his first one-man shows — two in Manila at the PAG, followed by two in New York as well as in Detroit. These shows were met with both critical approval and commercial success, “breaking records in sales as well as attendance for one-man shows” in the New York gallery. An art reviewer of the Detroit show exclaimed, “all (of his paintings) lead the eye and the imagination to a distant place.” The Sunday Times Magazine likewise proclaimed, “The interplay of sharp and explosive colors….are charged with vitality and a certain kind of dynamism. And even if the placement of the colors (blacks, yellows oranges, blues and reds) give one the impression of an exploding riot, it leaves a deep feeling of satisfaction and awe.”\n\n“Blue Horizon” (1959) marks the consolidation of Joya’s own inimitable style that would make him recognizable across the world. In just two more years, he would be the subject of an impressive retrospective at the Philam Life Building, testimony to his meteoric rise.\n\nFor Joya, the best was yet to come as he continued to ascend the heights in the 1960s. First, he was elected president of his beloved Art Association of the Philippines from 1962 to 1965. Next, in 1964, he was amid the movers and shakers of the XXXII Venice Biennale — the same year that Robert Rauschenberg would be the first American to take home the Golden Lion and the first year that the Philippines would be invited to participate. (Only one other Asian country, Japan, had national exhibits, marking the Philippines own rise in the region.)\n\nHe was ultimately proclaimed Philippine National Artist for the Visual Arts in 2003, after a stellar career that included the shepherding of the next generation of artists as the Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts from 1970 to 1978.\n\n-Lisa Guerrero Nakpil","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
José Joya (1931 - 1995)
Blue Horizon
signed and dated 1959 (lower right)
oil on wood
19” x 36” (48 cm x 91 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":6000000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":6000000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":7008000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37352,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/75.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":37353,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/75b.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":74,"next":76,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
