Ocampo was already purging his works of socio-realist strain and literary allusion. Since then, the National Artist had never returned to the figurative up until his death in 1978. The artist probably did this painting in a playful mood. His mastery of color is complemented by an originality of subject which provides intense pleasurable excitement. We may take it as a measure of H.R. Ocampo’s imaginative intensity that the organic metamorphoses of these paintings were provoked by inorganic images. H.R. Ocampo’s shapes and forms allude to growing things, as if nature comes to life all over again. The chromatic scale gradually moves from one tone to the other, abetted by gentle lines that define volume and suggest cellular tissues and leaf flame forms. The high quality of most of his work is palpable. It is reported that the master would destroy a painting if it did not come up to its original conception.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"<p><strong>Hernando R.
