Friends of Manansala Foundation, fellow\nartists and art critics, including grand-daughter and artist\nRonna Manansala, along with the center’s Executive\ndirector Robert Tantingco unveiled the university’s\ncollection of Manansala sketches, his studio and personal\nmemorabilia. This collection was but a handful from the\nlot that HAU had acquired. It was a fitting tribute to one\nof Pampanga’s illustrious sons, honoring his life and art.\nMang Enteng, as he is fondly called by those close to\nhim, was posthumously awarded the honor of National\nArtist for Painting in 1981 and is dubbed the father of\ntransparent cubism.

Holy Angel University in celebration of its 90th year\nauctions off some of Manansala’s sketches from their\nprivate and unseen collection. Proceeds of which will go to\nThe Manansala Endowment Fund for selected scholarship\nprograms. It is in keeping with the spirit and legacy of its\noriginal co-founder, Don Juan D. Nepomuceno.

Don Juan Nepomuceno had plucked out a young artistic\nstudent from shyness, discouragement and obscurity\nduring the university’s silver jubilee of 1958. He and\nhis son Nestor Nepomuceno commissioned this young\nartist to paint several portraits including Don Juan and\nhis wife, followed by Joseph McMicking, Jr. of the Ayala\nCorp. Archbishop Pedro Santos and many others in 1963.\nThe young artist went on and enlisted at Dale Carnegie\nand was able to make a name for himself. This among\ncountless stories of giving education and opportunities\nto the less privileged are all revealed in the Holy Angel\nUniversity’s diamond year history book, Destiny and\nDestination by Robert Tantingco.

In the realm of fine arts, a master’s secret is always a\ntreasure trove of esquisses or sketches in sketchbooks,\npaper napkins, scratch paper, cardboard. Any writing\nmaterial is literary carte blanche or free game for any\nartist. The urge and inspiration can strike anywhere.\nManansala’s mental machinations is a fury and flurry of\nstudies upon studies of the same subjects. His bucolic\nand Filipiniana folk scenes, Catholic imagery and even\nhis perspective on social poverty and hardship that the\ncommon Filipinos face, then and now are littered in the\nmany pages of paper.

Picasso’s bull sketches are Manansala’s many studies\nand sketches of the Philippines’ beast of burden, the\nlowly but formidable kalabaw/carabao. Paris, a famous\nplayground of the artists of the modern movement,\nwas also Manansala’s playground during his study\ngrant in the fifties. Sketches of les gens de Paris and les\nboquinistes de Seine line many of his sheets of paper. His\nexperimentations for what is to be his transparent cubism is\ntested through pencil, charcoal, in different shading effects.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":220000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":220000,"userBid":11235,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":256960,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":3641,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/6/8/lot/75.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":3643,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/6/8/lot/75a.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":74,"next":76,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
