Despite this, he pursued architecture and travelled to the United Stated as one of the first pensionados in architecture. After much contribution to the pre-war Philippine skyline, Arellano retired in 1956 — it was right after this retirement that he ventured back into painting. In 1960, he exhibited his works at the Manila YMCA; he passed away on December 5th of the same year.
