He held his first one person show at the  Solidaridad Galleries in 1973. In Lao’s works there is often a play of contrasts between free organic shapes and the geometric order of the panel design.   Influenced by conceptual ideas in the 1970s, many artists including Lao Lianben even  employed non traditional materials and  experimental techniques.
