The aforementioned piece formed part of a series of paintings of historical events commissioned by Insular Life during the post-war period, which were subsequently used in Insular Life calendars from the late 1950s to the 1980s. This sketch depicts a pre-colonial native woman in the act of offering, genuflecting while holding a long necklace.

Amorsolo’s The Sale of Panay for a Golden Salakot is inspired by the Maragtas Legend, which tells of the story of the ten Bornean Datus, led by Datu Puti, who, together with their families and their subjects, escaped from the tyranny of Sultan Makatunaw of Borneo, and eventually landed on Aninipay (Panay), which they named Madya-as.

A treaty between the Ati people, ruled by Marikudo and his wife Maniwangtiwang, and the Datus ensued, resulting in the former bartering the island for a golden salakot (saduk), a long gold necklace (manangyad), and other cordial offerings by the Bornean chieftains.
