His childhood memories inspire him to paint and serve as images stored in the cellar of his mind. And so, even when the subject is purely imaginary, his canvas conveys a lot of descriptive quality. For instance, his landscape paintings have nothing to do with the experience of looking at nature. His landscape paintings are not seen in terms of rocks or trees, but of paint on canvas — a vibrant massing of paint with a life of its own.

Furthermore, what makes his works one of a kind is his use of color. Colors exude the artist’s emotions that his subject awakened in him, and this can be observed in his portraits of women. An article by Angel de Jesus said: “What draws the attention are their eyes, which seem to follow the viewer everywhere...They look alive and re-enforce the colors to give the paintings the vitality of life.” His approach is always intuitive as he never adhered to theories about color. Also, unknown to many, he has an imbalanced response to color, weak in red and green but intensely sensitive to yellow and blue. On the bright side, it allowed him to study the works of his predecessors in a different light. In the end, Lamarroza did not let this affect his art.

“If there is an absolute originality in Lamarroza, it lies in his gift of pure color,” wrote Manuel Duldulao in his book titled Prudencio Lamarroza: His Life and Art.
