His subjects are often folk figures such as vendors, cockfighters, ice-cream peddlers, and balloon sellers. He paints as a way to celebrate the different cultural aspects of the Philippines. A mixture of abstract forms and lines with various vibrant colors, Antonio’s 1983 oil piece titled Vendors displays a mastery of form and rhythmic order and an artistic eye for composition.

Modernist and Expressionist in approach is the art of Antonio. His works show the influence of Manansala while portraying themes that are absolutely Filipino in context, color, and flavor. Through the years, though, he was able to develop a style of his own. Antonio is also acclaimed for his Nascent-Cubism style with emphasis on solid and assertive diagonal lines combined with a unique technique for figurative distortions and the use of the color black in contrast with bold and brilliant primary or muted tertiary colors. In 1984, a year after this piece was made, Antonio received the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila.
