The once unconventional practice that once drew the ire of the public eye has now broken into the mainstream, with everyone from working class heroes to iconic celebrities sporting all sorts of ink. This boost in popularity has also given way to the rise of artists experimenting and innovating within the medium and genre. From fine-line to watercolor, the world of tattoos has grown exponentially. Among the most exciting voices working with tattoos and tattoo-based art in the country today is Filipino contemporary artist Nep Cardenas. A native of Batangas City, Cardenas admittedly started off as a scratcher; untrained in the craft but eager to learn. Eventually he would land an apprenticeship in Manila that gave him the necessary skills to become a full-fledged tattoo artist.

Cardenas’ works do not only on the skin, but have branched out to different types of media as well as seen in these two works. The artist has taken inspiration from a number of iconic tattooing influences such as Sailor Jerry flash sheets, traditional Japanese Irezumi, and even Neo Traditional tattoos. In doing so he has created a unique practice that employs pronounced lines, exaggerated positions, and even comical expressions that give life and dynamism to the craft.
