In these two works, we are presented with the National Artist’s range and mastery in art; furthering the idea that one must master the rules in order to break them.<br /><br /> The sensual features of the lying nude are subtle and intimately captured in its proportions. The male figure’s pose is complex in composition yet Joya is able to depict it with a direct approach, bringing out its essence and grace without too much focus on eroticism. He is depicted in uncompromising expressive lines (an uncommon treatment for male figures during the time) showing how Joya has contributed to the celebration of the portrayal of intimacy and raw sexuality in art. <br /><br />But Joya’s untitled pastel on paper takes on a different yet equally timeless subject-matter. While the previous work tackles the raw and expressive sensuality of the human body, this piece captures a moment in time within the Filipina experience. The subject matter presented here is rendered in traditional garb and is positioned in such a way that evokes a sense of naivety and curiosity that, when positioned within today’s context, seems like both a relic of the past yet an undeniable step within the present context of femininity and womanhood. <br /><br />These two pieces, both seemingly occupying two different ends of the same spectrum, are perfect examples of how Joya’s artistry has evolved from mere technique and into the realm of the sublime.
