Father Mateo Gisbert (1847-1906) worked for some decades in Mindanao (1880-1903), first on the slopes of Mount Apo, and later in Baganga. He is best known for having been part of the first expedition to reach the summit of Mt. Apo in 1880. The letters he wrote from Mindanao show that he was a missionary very concerned about the material welfare and prosperity of the natives.<br></br>This work of his is the first part (the second is a Bagobo-Spanish Dictionary) of a dictionary of the Bagobo language, today called Tagabawa, belonging to the Manobo linguistic subfamily, spoken by about fifty thousand people in the surroundings of Mount Apo. The Bagobo used to practice human sacrifices, as Gisbert himself explains in the prologue of this work: “One of the infidel Tribes of Mindanao over which the Prince of Darkness still reigns with all his horrors, is that of the Bagobos, who live in the forests and mountains of the Cordillera of the Apo volcano; who, while it is true that they recognize a Supreme Being, creator of all things, called Diuata, believe also in another Being from whom all evils proceed, such as pestilence, famine, sickness and death. And this is Mandarangan or great demon, powerful and terrible, who, needing to feed on human blood, the Bagobos offer it to him to be propitious, in the frequent human sacrifices that they make by quartering the victims that they take from other races, or from the slaves that do not want to be subjected to them, or from those that do not serve them because they are old or sickly. Even if the Bagobos are so barbarous and criminal, they are nevertheless worthy people, and they give a good account of themselves, once attracted to the social and Christian life. It is true that it is very difficult to make them renounce the independence and freedom of the forest, because of the impunity with which they make human sacrifices there; but this must be a reason for missionaries and rulers working together, each one according to his mission, not to give up until they achieve the spiritual and material conquest of this tribe. […] During the twelve years that I have been a Missionary in the Seno de Davao I have had occasion to know and treat the Bagobos and I have found it necessary to learn and speak their language, for which I have tried to write down and collect the terms proper to it, paying close attention to the way of speaking and the mechanism and grammatical variations that they use. But it should be noted that although the Bagobos have and speak their own language, in the villages bordering the Bilanes, Tagabilies and Moors of the interior, they use some words of the races with whom they are more in contact, noting above all a great difference in the inflections of the voice. [...] I have not seen until now any manuscript or book in Bagobo, which could have served me as a guide”.
