FOLDED MAPS, INCLUDING AN INTERESTING MAP OF THE PORTS OF THE PHILIPPINES, IN FAIR TO GOOD CONDITION.","provenance":null,"exhibited":null,"literature":null,"write_up":"Guillaume Josph Hyacinthe Jean-Baptiste Le Gentil (1725- 1792) was a French astronomer, although he is best known for this travel book, in which he recounts his ill-fated and bizarre journey to Puducherry (French territory in India) to observe the 1761 transit of Venus. Le Gentil left Paris in March 1760 and arrived in Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, three months later. When they finally decided to leave for Puducherry, they learned that war had broken out between France and England, so they did not disembark and Le Gentil decided to make astronomical observations from the frigate. They were useless, however, because of the ship’s movements. Consequently, Le Gentil decided to wait in India until the next transit, which would occur in 1769. He arrived in Manila for that purpose in March 1768, but was badly received by the authorities, who considered him a spy, and returned to Puducherry. He built a small observatory there and waited for the day - June 3, 1769 - but was unable to make any observations because the skies were overcast. After many vicissitudes, he returned to France in October 1771, where, assuming him dead, his wife had married another man and his property had been distributed among his heirs.\nThis first edition is highly sought after and rare.
