He sailed to New Orleans, travelled up the Mississippi River to explore the Louisiana Territory, and then took a canoe up the Red River to Nachitoches. Crossing Texas on horseback, he then traversed Mexico, sailed to Guam and the Philippines, and proceeded to Java, India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine before sailing back to Marseilles. Vols. I and II of this edition cover the narrative until 1771 when Pagés returned to France,\nOnly chapters IX-XI of the first volume deal with the Philippine Islands, in which he devotes several pages to describing the character of the Tagalogs of the suburbs of Manila. Regarding the city, he comments: “The city of Manila is of very considerable extent. The streets are handsome, and built in a good style, and the houses better and more convenient than may be discovered at first sight by a stranger. The inhabitants of the first distinction are rich, and those of the inferior orders are generally in easy circumstances. Here the taste for expense, luxury and debauchery, is much less than that which prevails in Mexico. Every object around me seems to have assumed the air of the gay, simple, and indigenous Indian; insomuch, that even the haughty and arrogant temper of the Spaniard, appear in some measure to have been subdued by the mild example of his more amiable neighbour”.
