The expedition, of a scientific nature - it carried botanists, naturalists, geologists - consisted of 7 ships. The conflicts they had with the natives of the Pacific, in which many deaths occurred, are well known. The volume of most interest to the Filipino reader is the fifth (chapters VIII and IX), in which there are many interesting observations, all of them frankly expressed: “Among the lions of the place [Manila], the great royal manufactories claim special notice from their extent and the many persons employed [...] The sum paid for wages is very triffling. The whole number of persons employed is about fifteen thousand [...] The natives of the Philippines are industrious. They manufacture an amount of goods sufficient to supply their own wants, particularly from Panay and Ilocos”.
