He was in the Philippines between 1859 and 1860. In 1873 he published Reisen in den Philippinen in German. This is the English translation. The same year a Spanish translation appeared in Madrid by the naturalist Sebastián Vidal y Soler, who worked in the Philippines. According to this translator, this work “is the most modern of travels through the archipelago and surpasses all others in accuracy and scientific precision. The observations of the country, its customs and social life are, for the most part, excellent; and the classification of natural objects, entrusted to learned German professors, is in accordance with the latest advances of science.” The author declares in the prologue that it is not a book of entertainment, but an accurate painting of those islands.” Unlike other travel books, it does not focus on Manila, but on the provinces: it has chapters dedicated to Bulacan, Laguna, Alba, the Mayon volcano, Sorsogon, Camarines, Samar, Leyte and Panay, with specific chapters on the customs of the Bicolanos and the Bisayas. With numerous illustrations and a large folded map of the Philippines.
