He excelled in figurative and abstract art, from his portraits, female nudes, and depictions of mother and child, to his Diaphanous and Permutation Series. Olazo’s signature non-representational paintings and prints found their way to the forefront of the second generation of the modernist movement.<br /><br /> A vivid imagination combined with incredible vigor was the fuel behind the creativity of Olazo. However, his intense labor on the Diaphanous series has sharpened his sensitivity to the sinuousness of shapes. In order to relax the rigor of his highly concentrated shapes, he regarded the possibility of exploring a shape that, at a glance, the eye can perceive as a whole. Fortunately, nature gave the artist a shape that reminded him of his childhood, kasoy. Olazo was drawn to the cashew’s simple and seductive form, accented at the top by the piquant seed, consumed as nuts, and familiar to all Filipino children. That was the story of how the kasoy came into Olazo’s oeuvre, driven onto his canvases by the same Diaphanous transparency technique. The rising accumulation of cashew shapes, each meshing into the other, then fused at random intervals, resulted in a spectacular fitness and mobility.<br /><br /> In 1972, Olazo received the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
