Paeteños reside under the shadow of a green mountain that the fine artist climbs every summer, traveling all the way to Mt. Apo in Mindanao for his mountain climbing activities. He likes to paint nature and draws inspiration from “Jungle Book” and “Tarzan.” The characters that grace his canvas are remarkable, dressed in traditional attires and appear with long and thin necks. These peculiar people bear with them a nostalgic air, and the setting behind them are as well reminiscent of the past. His art enters the realm of historical fiction by reimagining our colonial past through a whimsical lens. The nostalgia in the art of Rubio does not solely serve as an aesthetic enticement but also calls into question the role of memory in the formation of history.
