From the late 1940s, Dumlao underwent a “Philippine phase,” perhaps due to the fervent patriotism after the destruction and carnage of the Second World War. During this period, Dumlao produced what is arguably his most famous work— Ina ng Lahi, painted in 1952 and bought by Don Andrés Soriano, the Spanish Filipino industrialist responsible for expanding San Miguel Brewery into the San Miguel Corporation and co-founder of the Philippine Airlines. Dumlao was also a master muralist who painted monumental masterpieces for the Malacañang, Manila Hotel, and the Bank of America. Dumlao also undertook the relining and cleaning of Luna’s iconic Spoliarium in 1960.

The book Kayamanan: Biographies of Philippine Visual Artists describes Dumlao as a watercolor virtuoso, handling the medium with a dexterity that rivals Manansala (Manansala was a master of the medium since it’s one of his favorites. Interestingly, Manansala and Dumlao were good friends, being childhood compadres in prewar Intramuros where they both grew up.).

Dumlao was a well-decorated artist. Among his exemplary accomplishments include the 2nd prize in the Filipiniana category for his painting Benguet Lily and first honorable mention at the National Art Competition sponsored by the University of Santo Tomas in 1941; 3rd prize plus special awards for best female figure (Sultana) and best landscape (Balut Island) at the 5th AAP Annual in 1952; and 3rd prize in the conservative painting category of the 1954 AAP Annual.
