As is common in “Boterismo,” Obemio’s plump and rotund characters exude a dreamlike quality and a sense of whimsy, creating a fantastical environment.

As with his 2012 Curly Hair, Obemmio’s penchant for Boterismo is still evident; however, the sense of wonder and whimsy morphs into something more mature and darker. As he uses only charcoal on paper, the sense of color that elevates his works is now noticeably absent, emphasizing the scowl on the face of his usual voluptuous and round figure. The man is built like a children’s storybook protagonist, his face and body round and soft, yet his hardened expression and his stance belies a dark past. This striking juxtaposition of childish art style and gritty subject matter makes Curly Hair an interesting piece, a magnificent blend of whimsy and corruption that mirrors personal and social expectations.
