Ocampo The Beginnings of Resplendent Abstractions H.R. Ocampo’s grasp of colors and tonalities needs no further explanation. His decision to stay and learn in the country despite the myriad of opportunities to follow the footsteps of his contemporaries in their studies abroad meant his colors are as close as possible to the authentic Filipino hues. In the same veins at the banderitas strewn across town during a lively festive, so too are the colors of an Ocampo piece – vibrant, glowing, and unmistakably Filipino.

However, despite this, Ocampo is also known for his impeccable nude drawings. These works provide an interesting insight into the luminary artist’s creative process. Through using only lines and form, Ocampo’s knowledge of anatomy shines through. These impromptu and unrefined works show the beginnings of Ocampo’s visionary pieces.

“Modern art in the Philippines meant Hernando R. Ocampo. One was either for or against modern art as one was for or against Ocampo,” Lyd Arguilla once stated. Indeed, even through his rudimentary nude sketches, Ocampo’s brilliance shines, a testament to the legend the National Artist would soon reach within Philippine history.
