His dalagas, lavanderas, and rustic rural scenes dominated the 20th-century Philippine art scene with the “Great Old Man of Philippine Art” becoming the face and image of Filipino art for years to come.

However, while he was most known for his Tagalog genre pieces, Amorsolo also turned northwards as evidenced by his Igorots of Mountain Province. A quaint little family takes center stage – the rice terraces are a prominent backdrop of this piece with the family trekking up the terraces carrying their goods up on their backs. The signature Amorsolo romanticism is present even through his simple sketches.

Amorsolo gives the Indigenous their spotlight in this work. A master of capturing the national identity, the Indigenous is included in his depiction of the collective national consciousness, a reminder of their rightful place in our remembrance of Philippine history.
