Taking on the apex of his portraiture skills, Onib’s classic distortion and dark color palette take center stage as he portrays a woman sitting up on her bed, face drawn in horror and confusion as she takes in her surroundings as though roused from a nightmare. Strikingly of all, two faces protrude out of her head, blending and mixing with her own features as she stares on, a three-faced creature. <br /><br />Onib’s distortions have been the centerpiece and the source of discomfort among his viewers and patrons. With his 1979 portrait, one can see the beginnings of his configurations with the man’s facial features appearing to be scrabbled. His later portrait, a 1996 Chateau 1771 Habitue, takes this disfiguration even further, with this man’s whole face itself distorting into almost impossible lengths.<br /><br /> However, the apex of his contorted portraiture is reached in his Female Profile. The horrors viewed by his creations lurk from beyond the canvas, a terror that the viewers – the Filipino people who were plunged into an uncompassionate system – can easily project onto. These works show a bird-eye view of Onib’s portraiture evolution where he successfully translates the Filipino spirit that boasts of both resilience and turmoil. Under an oppressive system, he makes literal this distortion that seems to plague the masses, trapping both its subjects and its viewers in this delightedly twisted vision.
