He did realistic oil paintings that perfectly encapsulate the everlasting beauty of the Philippines—the magnificent countryside and native folks performing their daily activities while basking under the soft sunlight. Additionally, he was part of the pioneering staff of the University of the Philippines’ School of Fine Arts, established in 1909.

Austria finished Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas and taught painting there for 27 years. After retiring from the academe, he dedicated his life to being a full-time artist. He participated in group exhibits at several local and international galleries and had held his first one-man show in Gallerie Dominique in 1979.

Rivera y Mir’s skilled hands and profound colorwork created numerous dreamy terrains evocative of the peaceful pre-war Philippines. His landscapes, with their tonal hues and anecdotal settings, powerfully demonstrate his ability to capture the essence of his subjects. While most of his works revolve around landscapes, his sphere of excellence also spread to portrait paintings, a testament to his skill and versatility as an artist.

Bearing Vicente Rivera y Mir’s masterful brush strokes and sublime color sense, Portrait of Dr. Jose Abad Lopez was one of his most revered portraits. Painted in 1943, this astonishing oil on canvas piece portrays a sat-down image of the distinguished Dr. Lopez in his white suit. The book in his hands and a few more displayed in the background add up to his honorable reputation as a UST professor and Botong’s personal physician. The artist’s profound knowledge and utilization of colors enabled him to place the right amount and location of shadows and highlights, adding depth and enlivening his works.
