One is bound to recognize Cabrera’s works through his subject’s soulful eyes, their faces quintessentially Filipino but with a unique twist to them.

Mga Apo ni Lola features these characteristic eyes. A gaggle of children sits around their aged grandma who is in the midst of a story. They sit, their eyes wide and captivated as they listen to her, all in various states of interest.

Childlike wonder is apparent in this piece. Despite the simplicity of their clothes and appearance, the children are captivated and so is the viewer. As one peers into Cabrera’s canvas, they cannot help but see themselves in the shoes of one of these wide-eyed children. They are transported into a more innocent and carefree past, his genre work mixing the nostalgia of the piece and putting it into the perspective of a child living their first life.
