After moving to New York and Paris in 1953 and 1954, respectively, he moved to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico in 1955 where he settled down with his wife Nina. In the midst of this, Tabuena has accumulated a truly global sense of artistry, born from his Filipino tastes and international studies.<br /><br />With this 1954 Mother and Child, created during his Parisian student period, he has already shown his proclivities for Filipino inspiration. Before his move to Mexico in 1955 where he gained a cubistic style, Tabuena had used dark tones and a proletarian focus, the hint of Expressionistic distortion elevating the piece. With Mother and Child, Tabuena elongates their limbs, carefully leaving their faces blank and emphasizing the empty space with a sense of loneliness or quietude that permeates the canvas.<br /><br /> In the years that followed. Tabuena would soon shed this dark era of his, turning to a vibrant and cubistic style that stemmed from his residence in San Miguel de Allende. His unique blend of Mexican and Filipino inspiration did not go unacknowledged by both countries when in 2000, the two countries held a Millennium Show in his honor with the Philippines further awarding Tabuena with the Presidential Merit Award in 2007.
