He was among the Filipino masters of genre painting in the 1920s, alongside Fernando Amorsolo and Dominador Castañeda. However, Herrera never exhibited nor attempted to sell his pieces while still alive. His works were only shown to the public for the first time in 1972, four years after his demise.

Herrera graduated with a degree in medicine from UST in 1912 and took a second course to earn a fine arts degree from UP. Later, he also served as a teacher at the UP School of Fine Arts and was known to be the most prominent and scrupulous mentor of anatomy and perspective. Among his mentees were Vicente Manansala, Carlos Francisco, Cesar Legaspi, Napoleon Abueva, Jose Joya, Abdulmari Imao, and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, all of whom became some of the revered national artists of the Philippines.

His favorite subjects include serene rural scenes, landscapes sometimes populated with the townsfolk in their everyday lives, and women doing various activities. Dr. Herrera’s figures exhibit his intimate understanding of human anatomy, a reflection of his earlier profession as a physician.
