These pieces, reminiscent of his many sojourns and experiences in and out of the Philippines, are a testament to his innate talent and prolific artistry. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in UST, he ventured into the foreign land of San Francisco to study art in 1953 before leaving for Mexico to practice mural techniques. Later, he also studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts and the Sorbonne in Paris.

His education, travels, and experiences abroad exposed him to diverse cultures and experiences, leading him to experiment with different materials and techniques in his pieces. Moreover, these influences significantly shaped his art, creating a unique blend of his personal experiences and artistic expression.

While his earlier works were watercolor paintings representing his cheerful childhood and the rich culture of his hometown of Lucban, he would soon be known for his cubistic art pieces of genre scenes later in his life, a style heavily influenced by his mentor, Vicente Manansala. From the 1970s onwards, Zalameda’s oeuvre was characterized by kaleidoscopic colors on overlapping and intersecting planes and thick brush strokes, showcasing his versatility and growth as an artist.

Like his vibrant hues, Oscar Zalameda is undoubtedly a gem in Philippine art—a Filipino through and through. Despite his Western encounters and influences, his dedication to his Filipino roots shines through in every stroke on his canvases. With his dexterous hands, he graced the art scene with works that not only reflect his personal views and perceptions but also the bright colors of the world around him, inviting the audience to see the world through his eyes.
