Born in Ilocos Sur, Vitalis first migrated to the United States in 1917 before settling in France in 1926 where a majority of his artistic career took place.

Vialis’s arrival in Paris is at an opportune time. France was flourishing as a pillar of the art world where many schools of thought were popping up and ever an artist, he too subscribed to one of them when he became acquainted with the Puteaux group of cubist artists. He also became acquainted with Camille Renault, a friendship that would be fundamental for Vitalis.

Still Life, dated 1931, is among the pieces Vitalis created when he lived at 66 Rue Lepic, where he shared an atelier with two other artists at 66 Rue Lepic and not far from where Van Gogh resided. However, he had best captured France’s atmosphere through his townscapes and landscapes, as evidenced by a 1984 piece. Depicting a view of the sea with ships and boats afloat, Vitalis’s impressionistic color scheme and brush strokes exhibit both academic prowess and heartfelt emotion.

In 1982, two years before the seascape painting, Vitalis received a visit from the Philippine ambassador to France as a show of appreciation for his work. By 1986, he left France for good, settling with his sister in the Philippines where he continued his art career until 1989.
