An admirer of the great Carlos “Botong” Francisco, the young artist had often visited the maestro in his studio to observe his work. As such, Austria’s works echo Botong’s affinity for the local infused with his personal twist.

With both Mag-anak works, Austria touches upon a central tenet of Filipino values – family. These works feature a mother and her child, curled around each other with palpable familial affection. Like many Austria works, he leaves no part of the canvas untouched, filling every nook and cranny with flowers and birds and leaves in the vein of Filipino maximalism.

Folk yet modern, Austia’s works embody not just the Filipino culture but in a greater aspect, the community with which his art has been largely formed. “Community, I think, played a greater role than what I learned in college,” he said in a Lifestyle Inquirer article. “Because within the community, artists can find the spirit of encouragement and they can learn how to enhance human interest.” Indeed, these Maganak works put at the forefront the community with which a child will eventually find their footing. It takes a village to raise a child and as Austria so succinctly puts it, there is perhaps no better place to see that than in the Filipino community.
