Through his signature color scheme and his sarimanoks, one finds oneself submerged in the legends that permeate Sulu and the rich ways, life, and culture of the southernmost region of the country.<br /><br /> In this 2006 work, Imao portrays what it is like to be a native child of the South. His colors speak of the vibrant tales of Mindanao, with his composition and subject matter an exploration of his Mindanaoan heritage. Through his works of the sarimanok, a mythical creature native to his land, he has included Mindanao into the national artistic consciousness, elevating what it means to be a Filipino.<br /><br /> \"Imao constantly championed and promoted the culture and religion of Mindanao but tempered it with Western principles, creating a hybrid phenomenon that stands unique in Philippine art,\" notes Architect Gerry Torres, who is the curator of A Life Without Borders at the Design and Arts Campus in the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Manila. Indeed, Imao’s oeuvre is emblematic of the place Moro culture has in the larger Philippine art culture, a timely and timeless piece that celebrates Filipino identity in its wholeness.
