Salaveria boldly claims about the National Artist Jose Joya. A famed abstractionist, Joya’s figurative works portray the artist’s mastery of line and form, and there is no better way to portray this than through his nude portraitures.

Back of Male Nude and Untitled (Nude) showcases Joya’s knowledge of the human anatomy. Back of Male Nude for instance was created at the latter stage of the artist’s career. Early Joya was a flurry of personal and interpersonal interpretations of the world with the artist finally coming to grips with a subject he has not tangentially explored – that is, man. His drawings are not just mere recreations of the human body; it is also a reflection of the man himself, the Other that haunts their shadows. These nude portraits leave out their subjects’s faces, effectively erasing them from the narrative and making it easier for the viewers to step into their lives. Indeed, Joya’s sketches are an interesting and proper study of man – his life, glory, regrets, and failures.
