Born to a family of farmers in Bulacan, his oeuvre reflects the everyday life and vibrant culture in which he had grown up. With this one, Antonio focuses on one of the country’s famous traditions – its long Christmas period. His usual bright and acidic color scheme emphasizes the country’s bright holiday spirit with the parol behind the vendors providing a shine that lights up the roads of the country come the last quarter of the year. His nascent cubist style emphasizes fragmentation – a fact made even more prominent due to his usage of pitch-black shadows – but paradoxically enough, it also shone a light on the country’s tight-knit community.

An art movement that came as a protestation to the Amorsolo school of thought, modernism twists and distorts its subject’s lines, shapes, and colors. But as the works of Angelito Antonio prove, it did not stray far from its predecessor’s fascination – that is, the Filipinos and their life, customs, and cultures.
