With their bodies “elongated, massive [...] with almost masculine assertiveness,” as the artist says herself, they are no less feminine despite of their long-limbed bodies. Throughout her works, Velasco eschews the choice between Amorsolo’s modest and delicate dalagas and the brutish, aggressive feminine figure, instead melding these views in a confident amalgamation of a woman’s gentle yet steely strength.

Her many works of the mother and child – some of which are available in this sale – perfectly encapsulate Velasco’s views. She depicts the mother with an almost larger-than-life physique, her neck thick and large, her shoulders broad, her hand covering a considerable space as she lays them on her child’s back. And yet her eyes shine with maternal love, her imposing presence a testament of protection and not intimidation. Through her works, Velasco provides an insightful perspective into the life of a Filipino woman – her struggles as she lives within a patriarchal society, and yet, her strength, character, and resilience despite it all.
