He was a close contemporary of Fernando Amorsolo, and their works were slightly similar but at the same time different from one another. Compared to Amorsolo’s warm and sunlit countryside, Castañeda uses cool tones, his landscapes resembling a cool afternoon air. Aside from his calm and scenic paintings, he also made a body of work looking back on the atrocities brought by the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines. But more than being an artist, Dominador Castañeda was more celebrated in the art scene as a formidable mentor whose influence extended far beyond his own artistic endeavors. He not only taught but also inspired many of his students, including several who would become national artists of the Philippines. For 29 years, he taught at the UP School of Fine Arts, five years of which he served as its Director. His impact as a mentor is seen in the lasting legacy he left in the art world, as evidenced by the respect and commemoration he receives from his former students, peers, and the art community of the University of the Philippines up to this date.
