He completed his engraving and modeling studies at the University of the Philippines in 1915 and later served as an instructor there. His influence extended beyond academics, as he also worked at the Sta. Clara Lumber Company, designed medals, and created monuments such as the Andres Bonifacio monument at the Plaza Guipit in Sampaloc.

Lights for Christmas is an oil on masonite board work that vividly captures a familiar scene during Simbang Gabi in the countryside. The painting features carabaos carrying three people on their backs, each holding a parol to light their path to the nearby Church. The scene is also bustling with the townsfolk eager to attend the mass, creating a lively and culturally rich atmosphere around the edifice, exuding a sense of warmth against the cold December air.

Santiago may have left behind only a few paintings, but among them, and perhaps the most known, was Christmas Eve, made in 1942. This masterpiece depicts a scene of a mother and child in a Filipino household, surrounded by objects alluding to the different cultures of our colonizers. Thus, Santiago’s canvases were powerful testaments to the unbending Filipino spirit and the enduring tradition of Christmas. No matter the foreign influences instilled in us and our circumstances, Christmas is a celebration that perseveres.
