Counting among his contemporaries the legends Jose Rizal and Juan Luna, his oeuvre may often be overshadowed but the virtuoso’s works are just as deft. His Mindanao landscape illustrates the artist’s grasp of his surroundings. The work at hand displays Hidalgo at his finest as utilizes quick, fleeting brush strokes to depict the southernmost region of the country in a bucolic bliss. With its warm color palette, the green foliage crawling over the walls of a distant castle turns almost nostalgic, as though the viewer is peering into the depths of their memories. The piece executes an air of warmth and life, with his usage of light and shadow plunging this piece into a dusk-like state. Hidalgo honed his stills first under the mentorship of his uncle and painter Justiniano Asuncion and later at the prestigious Academia de Dibujo y Pintura in Manila. This illustrious background combined with his mastery of the canvas, a deep understanding of colors, and an eye for detail makes Hidalgo one of the most eminent and underrated artists of his time.
