Born in Isabela in 1901, Pereira went to study in Manila in his early 20s. He studied painting at the UP School of Fine Arts and finished the program in 1925. While still at the university, he worked as a designer of labels and advertisements at Pacific Commercial and joined the Philippine Free Press magazine staff, where he produced a weekly editorial cartoon with a style he derived from painting, with bold washes injecting a dramatic atmosphere to the scene.<br /><br /> After a decade of working at the Philippine Free Press, Pereira took a break from the industry due to tuberculosis. However, in 1938, he once again rose in the art scene with his Batis (stream) series, a collection of works depicting young maidens either bathing or washing clothes. Although slightly similar to Amorsolo’s subject and light, Pereira’s canvases were sweeter, alluding to his exceptional utilization of orange and pink hues. His excellent colorwork thus perfectly encapsulates the everlasting beauty of the Filipinas and the bright and warm Philippine countryside.<br /><br /> In 1928, just three years after graduating from the university, he was chosen to be part of the Philippine art grand exhibition at the Ayuntamiento de Manila with his work Sweet Fifteen.
