Castro already manifested his inclination to arts, starting with simple sketches before delving into different mediums as he grew older. Born in Nueva Ecija, Castro’s canvases vividly represent countryside life. He painted realistic still-life images, serene landscapes, meticulously made edifices, and portrayed townsfolk activities.<br /><br /> turning point in his artistic career was his fortunate meeting with the famed genre artist and mentor, Fabian de la Rosa, who took notice of his talents and brought him to Manila for formal art education. In Manila, Castro was among the group of thriving artists on Mabini Street, called the Mabini Artists, in Ermita during the postwar period.<br /><br /> J.D. Castro’s years at the university honed his talents as a still-life painter, an area of excellence that earned him his place as one of the most celebrated artists in the Philippine art scene. The works at hand, made a few years apart, demonstrate the artist’s excellent brushwork and color proficiency. It is also worth noting the substantial difference between the two paintings, with the untitled piece looking more crisp and alive, brought by his ingenious use of white paint to create highlights. The Green Bananas (Bunqulan) Study - 98, on the other hand, looked a little more shadowed and flat in color. Nevertheless, these paintings were a testament to his exceptional talent and continuous practice and study.
